Is this more “Pompey humour”?
This stuff is usually about slang. I thought that a boiler might be someone who’s about to explode so boiler grant might refer to my landlord exploding.
But when I looked into what “boiler” means in slang, I got this:
A boiler refers to an unattractive older woman who is only good for the pot, as in having to cook an old chook in boiling water to make it tender and more eatable.
Ha ha. Oh, yeah, that too’s been common in my life in recent years and the local crap – whatever it is – geared up on the day of my most recent birthday.
I also found this:
INFORMAL•BRITISH a chicken suitable for cooking only by boiling.
So, is this about Portsmouth’s usual blatant misogyny or about Portsmouth’s housing and property developers? I don’t know how to combine (explain) the misogynist explanation with “grants”, though.
Oh, and in view of the fact that about a third of the UK population lives in (deep) poverty, my “rebellion of one” represents about one third of the UK population, doesn’t it? Poor Brits are traditionally pushed down by the class system here. But I’ve had the luxury of having lived without class repression for a very long time – outside of the UK – so I consider myself a fully fledged human being in spite of how, say, Roger Downey feels about the matter.
