What the opposite of insularity looks like?

Maybe like this.

This is what the Dutch news looks like this morning and it struck me that the top headlines are about the United States and Canada on the left and California on the right, followed by headlines about Darfur, Ukraine and Russia and the magazine Rolling Stone.

Below that is a headline about Libya, one about Brazil and then finally the first Dutch news, about an explosion in Rotterdam.

I should add that there are often explosions in the Netherlands nowadays. There is little general crime left in the country, but there is a lot of big crime, organized crime. I understand that within the context of the latter – perhaps akin to how the country line system works in the UK – youngsters are recruited to cause explosions at various residences and businesses, for example, within money-laundering contexts. Casualties are rare but occasionally, the wrong house is targeted.

Did you know that the Netherlands is the world’s biggest importer of solar panels? That’s because most of them are transported onward to other countries. It’s also the word’s second-largest exporter of agricultural products. Yet it’s so tiny relative to most other countries…. Belgium is still smaller but Denmark is slightly larger whereas Luxemburg and Andorra are definitely smaller as well.
