OLD: Translations

Translation as a profession has almost died, now that AI is providing us with brilliant gems such as overnight sunshine. That is making it more fun to list a few actual translations that I carried out in the past.

I completed a substantial number of translations, mostly in the science and technology realm, such as patents (which require their own translation style as these documents have legal value), lab and instruction manuals, as well as (popular) science books, including several books in the For Dummies series (for Pearson Education via Fontline). I also translated chapters of several IT books by for example Joseph Valacich for Krivaja Translations (Marianne Kerkhof, PhD).

I wrote a section about tidal rivers and incorporated and translated the existing math parts into English. I also co-taught the accompanying 2D-modelling lab in SOBEK.

I am listed as “SmarterScience”, the name of my business. Review: https://boekenkrant.com/recensie/genetica-voor-dummies/

De kleine Scheikunde voor Dummies. I asked to be listed as “SmarterScience “, the name of my business. https://www.dummies.nl/producten/9789045351421-de-kleine-scheikunde-voor-dummies

This required a great deal of research and adaptation (rewriting). Ironically, while I was literally reading and annotating a report about the forensics practice in the Netherlands for the Dutch version, I was attacked. (Marianne Kerkhof and her husband helped me out then.)
Govert Schilling wrote the foreword in this Dutch version.
I translated this into English. It’s Gattaca-like, and has an intricate, well-crafted plot.
I wrote a section (on depressions, I think).
I asked to be listed under my business name “SmarterScience”. These last two books are translations of works by Duncan John.
